Vector lookup function

I'm currently trying to use the vector lookup function to return a value
from another column. This works fine as long as the data is in ascending
order. My problem is that the data column may not be sorted and is both
ascending and descending. Maybe there's a better way, any help would be
most appreciated.

Have a look at other lookup functions like VLOOKUP(), MATCH() with
INDEX(), etc., which allow you to set the match-type (range_lookup) to
0/FALSE.
