Default Proper way to enter array formula

Hello,

I'm embarrased to have to even ask this, but I CANNOT get my array formula

=IF (COUNTIF (NAMES, ???)1, "Duplicate", "")

BTW, NAMES is a named range in the spreadsheet.

to work. I followed the instructions carefully, and did the CTRL+ SHIFT +
ENTER at the same time, and it doesn't work. After I do the CTRL+ SHIFT +
ENTER it just shows the formula in the cell.

I am STUMPED.

What are the EXACT steps?

TIA.

It worked fine in my computer.
It's odd, if there is an error, error msg will be displayed in the cell
rather than the formula you entered.
Are you sure there is no space in front for the equal sign and/or after IF?

Check the cell format. If Text, change to General, then select the cell
w/your formula, hit F2 and Enter.

Yep. That did it. I thank you both for your replies.
