Smart tags for financial symbols

Why do smart tags only recognize 3 characters for financial symbols? I have
tried two characters, four characters and five characters, all valid stock or
mutual fund symbols. None of them are marked with smart tags, only the 3
character symbols.

I found the answer in another part of the forum. In order to fully use
financial symbols with smart tags, you need an add-in. Why doesn't Microsoft
mention this in their discussion of smart tags? Just a rhetorical question.

You can download the Excel 2003/2002 Add-in: MSN Money Stock Quotes:

This won't automatically create a smart tag for GM, for example. But
you can use the "Insert Stock Quotes" function on the newly installed
toolbar to create a quote for GM, which will drop that quote onto the
sheet where you specify. Then you can copy and paste the cell with
"GM" in it (now with a smart tag) to where ever else you might need it,
and the smart tag will go with it.
