Default may need programming?

I have a column listing 5 occurances of each weekday in a year, the next column is a field for an employee to type their name if they will be on vacation that day (total of 5 employees able to be off on each day). I would like the worksheet to recognize today's date and return which employees will be out of the office "this week" and which employees will be off "next week". Is this possible?

Can an individual be off for less than a full week, say only two days?

yes, they do not necessarily have to be off for the whole week
