Default Excel workbook to be used by multiple users at same time....possible???

I have to make a workbook that keeps track of inventory of samples under
certain study numbers which are delt with in one department and then
another and so on and so forth.

My question is, since this workbook will be used by multiple users most
likely at the same time....will excel allow this to happen?? Or will it
give an error message "Cannot read file, it is being used by another
program" or whatever??
