Is there a formula to keep a running balance of credits and debits in an
excel spreadsheet

There's probably a few hundred ways, but like your subject and question,
you'll only get vague answers.

Knowing nothing about the format of you sheet, you may want to out the
running totals in the top row, above the data. e.g

=SUM(B4:B65536)
