No matter how I enter a function, it displays as text in the cell and doesn't

I assume that your cell is formatted as text. Format the cell as General

I found I had to delete my formulae, reformat the column as General, and then re-enter the formula before it worked. Problem solved. And, you don't have to delete the formula first. Just reformat, hit F2 and

And if you have enterd many formulas do an edit/replace after re-formatting
to General.
