Despite the fact that it is valid syntactically, there are circumstances that will cause the formula to fail or not behave as expected. For example, if any of those cells contains text strings that do not look like numbers, the formula can return a #VALUE error. And the formula might not return the expected result because the actual value of those cells is not the same as displayed value.
