I am trying to summarise dates from 01/04/09 to April. Can any body help.
I have tried = month(cell) , but it comes up with a value . Any ideas?

If you have a date in say, A1, and you want to show the month in B1, in B1
enter "=A1" without the quotes. Now format B1 as custom mmmm. HTH Otto

Might be your date is not a date, but text.

What happens when you try to format it?
