Converting pounds and ounces in worksheet for a recipe
 

I have a homework assignment for my cooking class and am trying to enter the
information in a spreadsheet to convert to different size recipes and can't
remember how to set it up to convert. Like if I have one recipe that says it
is for 1 quart and you need 1lb 4 oz convert to a recipe that is 3 1/4 pints
what is needed for the new recipe???

Pints are volumetric measures and Lbs is a weight measure. There is
not conversion on that except where you derive a table for each product
by weight as to how much it displaces volumetrically.

We typically see this with flour, but any measure cup or such with
declarations on it would be off for other materials.

One is "wet measure" and one is "dry measure", which is another way the
food world looks at it.

1 quart = 2 pints

1lb 4 oz = 20 ounces

The above is what you have given me.

Therefore 2 pints must equal 20 ounces.

Therefore 1 pint equals 10 ounces.

Therefore 3.25 pints equals 10 ounces times 3.25 = 32.5 ounces.

I reckon that's your answer.

Takes me back to my school days!

Except that 2 pints does not equal 20 ounces.

1 pint is 16 ounces, but that is not what was asked for either.

1 pint is 16 ounces, but that is not what was asked for either.

It doesn't matter - the problem is the equivalent of knowing A, B, and C and
wanting X in the following

A/B = C/X

where A = 1 quart (2 pints), B = 20 Ounces, and C = 3.25 pints

so X = C*B/A

or 3.25*20/2

or 32.5 ounces.

A pint _is_ a pound the world around, but only if you're talking about
water.
