When I try to do something in Excel, why is it greyed out

Hi, I hope someone can help!
a friend was trying to show me how to print a full page in Excel and he
could not because everytime he tried to do something the function was greyed
out, why is this?

Maybe he was in the middle of editing a cell at the time.
