I have an excel spreadsheet with 6000 rows in it. Each row represents a
document style. I wish to link from excel to images of each document. I can
do it one row at a time, but wanted to create a formula, that selected the
name, and could be duplicated.

Ie: document 1 , doc 2, doc 3, number resides in cell A1, B1, C1 etc.

take a look at using the HYPERLINK and INDIRECT function (XL help file). You
can use them to reference another cell for the name you want, and then
hyperlink to them.

I tried using the hyperlink(),
as follows:
=HYPERLINK(P2,"Example") link to column p2 which contains:
T:\Indexing\Aids\Images\1 - 999\D ( 1).pdf
I get the message : cannot open the specified file.

the information for P2 is derived via
=CONCATENATE("T:\Indexing\Aids\Images\1 - 999\D ( ",C2,").pdf")
C2 contains the reference to each images unique identity.
