Dates

can the months only can be formated as dates; example when I typed November
26, 2004 it comes up in the formula bar as 11/26/2004. I have cell with
abreviated month ( Jan, Feb, Mar etc.) and need it to be formatted as dates.
Is it possible?

Hi Kay,

Do you mean that you only have Jan, Feb, Mar etc without the year? If so
then they just appear as text.

However, if you insert Jan 2004, Feb 2004, Mar 2004 then they appear that
way in the cell but viewed on the formula bar they are actually 1st of each
month. You can even autofill with them.

If you want the months to be dates in the cells so you can identify them as
months then insert them as above and then use Number Format to format the
cells to mmm.

Hi,

If the cells contain dates, not just month text, and you want to show months
abbreviated then:
2003:
1. Select the cells and choose Format, Cells, Number tab, Custom, and enter
MMM on the Type line

2007:
1. Select the cells and choose Home, click the quick launch button in the
Number group, on the Number tab, choose Custom and enter MMM on the Type line.

If the cells contain three letter abbreviations and you want to convert
those to dates you must use a formula, not a format. That means if you want
the text Jan to be Jan 1, 2009 you need a formula. If this is what you need
let us know.

If this helps, please click the Yes button.
