Excel formulas become cell contents

I am experiencing a problem in Excel. When I enter a formula (any formula)
in certain cells the formula remains visible in the cell as the cell content.
However if I enter the same formula in another part of the spreadsheet the
formula behaves the way it is suppose to...invisible except for the results
of the formula.

I guess that your cell is formatted as text. Reformat the cell as General,
then re-enter the formula, either by typing it in again or by F2, enter.

The cell is formatted as TEXT. Change the cell format to GENERAL and re-enter
the formula.
