Some other variations...

=sum(a1:a5)+sum(a10:a20)
or
=sum(a1:a20)-sum(a6:a9)

You may find it easier to add an indicator column:

I used column B with an X in it if it should be summed:
=sumif(b1:b20,"X",a1:a20)

If you used X to indicate that the cell should be skipped:
=SUMIF(B1:B20,"<"&"X",A1:A20)
