Struggling Student

help with data labels

I am new to using excel charts. i want to change the layout of the data
labels in a pie chart to show a percentage. I click on chart tools, data
layout, more data lable options and then check the box for percentages and
then close. this seems to do absolutely nothing to what is being displayed.
can anyone help?
