Using dropdown in protected sheet

I am having trouble choosing items from a drop down list when my sheet is
protected. In the same file I have certain areas where this is not a problem
at all, but everytime I try to change the cell value via dorp down, or empty
the cell, I get a "shete is protetced" type error. I thought maybe it had to
do with the fact that my drop downs are in merged cells, but I unmerged them
and had the same issue. Any thoughts?

Hi,

It looks like that particular cell or a range comprising that cell has been
protected, Unprotect that cell to use the drop down

Is this a Data|validation cell?

If yes, then unlock that cell.

And yes, this behavior changed. (I think xl2k the cell could be locked. In
xl2002, the cell has to be unlocked. I may be wrong with the versions, but
there is a difference somewhere!)
