why can't i enter text into merged cells in excel

what happens when you try?
what version of excel?
on all worksheets in all workbooks or only one workbook?
can you merge a cell and enter data in it in a new workbook?
have you run detect & repair from the help menu

it's also a good idea to give us a bit more details about the situation (ie
answers to questions above) in the message body rather than just typing a
problem into the subject line ....
