I AM IN COMPATIBITY MODE AND THE GET EXTERNAL DATA BUTTONS ARE GRAYED OUT AND
I CAN NOT IMPORT THE DATA BASE I WANT WHAT AM DOING WRONG

First - it's common newsgroup courtesy NOT POST IN CAPS.
Second - Do you have more than one sheet tab selected? Right click any tab
and choose "ungroup"
