My formulas will not calculate

I am trying to use the PROPER formula to correct the case of names in a data
base.
The formula will not calculate. I have set the Calculation button in tools
options to automatic. I have also tried the CTRL+` step. This happens whether
the cells are formatted to be locked, unlocked, hidden or not.

Make sure your font supports both upper and lower case characters. Some
fonts do not.

Might be helpful to see a sample of your data and your formula that isn't working.

I found it! Turns out the cells must be formatted as General rather than
Text. Thanks
