Default Two "IF" functions in one cell

I was wondering if it is possible to insert two IF functions in one cell.

For instance =IF(A1="x","a","") and IF(A1="y", "b","")

You do what is called "nesting".

=If(A1="x","a",If(A1="y","b",""))
