Convert Date format

I have a date 1/25/2008 and I want to format to 1/2008 with the format still
being a date not text so that it will pivot on a chart with that info.

Hi,

Choose Format, Cells, Number tab, Custom and on the Type line enter M/YYYY

Format the number using the Custom option. Under Type key in m/yyyy

If you format as m/yyyy what do you get?
Note that formatting has nothing to do with underlying values.

If you group the dates using month and year you will get the chart showing
per month as well

I tried that but when I pivot table the information. It is not a date
anymore it seems to be text.
