how can i stop formulas from displaying like this =R[-49]C+R[-25]
 
it should look like =sUM(a1:a3), without all the brackets etc.

Click Tools Options General tab
Uncheck "R1C1 reference style" OK

If you make the change below you will also experience the following change:
The column headings in your spreadsheet will change from numbers to the
Excel default of letters.
