Getting Data from Closed Workbooks

I have formulas that link to other workbooks, which works fine when
they are open.
But if they are closed it says #VALUE! ... as soon as i open the file
it updates.
Is there anyway i can get this to update without opening the file, to
prevent me having to open the files that they are referring to every
time??
Thanks if you can help.

maybe...

Jim Rech posted a registry tweak:

Each recipient would have to make this same change.

Update links doesnt actually work, which i find bizzarre.
Also a registry tweak isnt viable at the moment im afraid, its at work
on the system with shared computers, unfortunately.

Thanks for looking though, maybe i can this Update Links thing to
work. Either that or i will just have to accept that i need to open
all the files??
