Automatic change of cells background color

I need to change a cell's background color when i type a particular
word/letter. What is the method for same?

Eg: When i type "P" in a cell, background color of the cell should change to
green.

Dear Aswathy:

You need to use conditional formating.

Pre 2008: From the format menu select conditional formating and then in the
dialog box that is displayed: cell value is equal to p.

On my system it is case insensitive i.e. it works for both p's (P and p). If
it doesn't just add another conditon.

On 2008 use the conditional formating button on the home(?) tab very much in
the same manner but there are a few more options and I can't remeber the
exact requirements - have a play with it and try it out.

Hope this helps
