i have done a search and if the data was a match i gave a "1" and if not a
"0". Now is there a way to highlight an entire row of coresponding data if
that one column ="1"

Format/conditional format/ cell value = 1, selecting the format you want.

If so B1=
format/conditional formating/formula is =$a1=1, select the format
copy the fomats to C1,D1...
Adjust the range according to your worksheet

In CF you don't want to use Cell Value Is, but instead you need Formula Is/
=$A1=1

Amend your cell reference as appropriate, but notice the *absolute*
reference for the column and *relative* address for the row. I have assumed
that you are loking for a number 1, but if you want to look for the text
string, change it to =$A1="1"

That sounds as if you haven't put the right formula in the right cell. Look
again at your data and at your formula. What formula do you have in which
cell?

If you want to test only cell a1, the formula in the selected cells in
column B has to be: =$a$1=1 The formula $a1=1 will test a1, a2 a3 etc

i want it to test a1 a2 and a3, how do i get column b to highlight the same
rows as in column a

If your values are in A1:A10, select B1:B10 and enter the conditional
formatting formula =a1=1 then select the formatting you want.

When you selected column B, are you sure you selected from B1 downwards when
you applied the formula =$a1=1? If you look in cell B3, for example, does
the CF formula say =$a3=1? You say the formula highlights the wrong row?
If you put the number 1 in A3, which row in column B is highlighted? What
formula is sitting in the CF condition for that cell?

If you had, for example, selected B2 downwards but applied the formula
=$a1=1, you'll be a row adrift. The formula in that case needs to be =$a2=1
