How do I turn off format painter so it doesn't keep popping up?

Is there an option to hide or cancel the format painter?

Depending on the version, but in pre xl2007 I would go to the right end of
the standanrd tool bar and look for the drop down arrow. Upon selection of
this arrow I would remove the check mark from the formate painter. This will
remove it (Hide it) from displaying on the standard tool bar. If you are
just tryiing to cancel the formating mode just click on the paint brush icon
on the tool bar.

What is happening?

If you are double-clicking, it will keep "popping up" until you hit <esc. If
you just single-click, it will only be applied once.

If you really want to get rid of it, right click in the toolbar area, select
customize; then drag the format painter off the toolbar.

Maybe you mean something other than "format painter"?

ToolsOptionsEdit

Uncheck "Show Paste Options Button"
