Inserting comments in Excel XP 2002

I have been using Excel for many years but have never used the comment
feature. I now need to use it for a project I am working on.

The directions given in help do not work for me. I click the cell on which I
want to comment, click insert, but the Comment menu item is either not there
or is grey.

How do I activate the feature?

If the sheet is protected InsertComment will be grayed out and "Insert Comment"
will be missing from right-click menu.

ToolsProtectionUnprotect Sheet.

You may have to supply a password.
