Import Excel Data Brings Spaces

When I import text data into brings in spaces following the
text...which doesn t allow me to center correctly. How do I
essentially cut off the spaces following the text. I try to use the
substitute fx but it removes the spaces between each work.

example

I_am_sam____

the underlines represent spaces

thanks in advance
