how can worksheets be deleted in Excel?

I used to be able to delete excess worksheets in an Excel file. I can't do
that anymore in Excel 2003. The choices for "Delete" and "Rename" are faded
out and not choosable. Any ideas?

The worksheet is neither marked as protected or shared (as best as I can
tell). But still can't do anything with the junk sheets.

No one mentioned that the workSHEET was protected.

If the workBOOK was protected delete sheet and rename sheet would be grayed out.

If the workbook is shared you could rename but not delete.
