Default Subtotal seem slower in Excel 2003

I have been using Excel for many years. The earlier versions appear to have
been able to handle subtotaling lots of data better. The newer version takes
a long time and tries to recalculate during the subtotaling process.

Other than turning off automatic recalculation, is there any other fix for
this issue?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks!!
