Formula in cell
 

Excel Help says enter 10-5 and it will read the answer as 5 in the cell. I
tried it, but it just read 10-5. So I then tried clicking Enter, but it then
read Oct 5. How can you do formulas in a cell?

You need an "=" equal sign in front of all calculations and formulas.

Replace your 10-5 with the following,

=10-5

The equal sign in front tells Excel that what you've typed is a FORMULA and
not just TEXT.
