Duste

Is there a way?

Is there a way to add up the number of lines that have writing in them versus
an amount?
For instance I have this spreadsheet and I want to add up how many sconces I
have and every time I add a new one the number updates.
I already have the cost added up just need to know how many equal that final
cost.

Sconces Description cost
4301-ON Living $79.50
372-OB Mirror / living $149.50
431-PN Living $89.50
322-PN Living $149.50
322-PN Living $149.50
1401-SN Bathroom $44.50
2131-SN Living $74.50
1972-PC Living $99.50
8821-NB Bathroom $49.50

Is there a way?

In your instance, perhaps one way which might suffice:
Placed in say, D2: =COUNTA(A:A)-1
will return the count in "Sconces" col, less the col header

I was curious as to what a "Sconce" was and according to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sconce
<Wiki
Sconce (fortification), a military fortification
Sconce (light fixture)
Sconcing, imposing a penalty in the form of drink.
</Wiki

I would guess you are dealing with electrical fittings, but the 3rd option
sounds much more fun, and quite possibly cheaper.
