cell protection, how to?

How do I protect selected cells for protection in a worksheet?
I have gone to tools and protection but can only seem to protect the full
worksheet, I have tried clicking/unclicking locked and unlocked boxes but
cant seem to get it right.

There are two layers, cell protection and worksheet protection. By
default every cell is protected but the protection is switched off
for the worksheet as a whole. To protect specific cells you need to
change both those layers, in sequence:

1. Unprotect the cells you don't want to protect (Format | Cells |
Protection).
2. Turn on the protection system with Tools | Protection | Protect
Worksheet.

Try it in this sequence ..

First, you need to "unlock" all cells in the sheet. Select the entire sheet,
click Format Cells Protection tab Uncheck "Locked" OK.

Now select only the cells that you want protected (Hold down CTRL to select
multiple cells/ranges). Click Format Cells Protection tab Check
"Locked" OK.

Then apply sheet protection via Tools Protection Protect Sheet
Password? OK
