Lookup value If cell is hilighted

I need to sum up survey answers from many participants. One section of the
survey have 5 possible answers a participant can select one from (answers are
the same on all rows, from left to right: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). The user will
highlight only one answer in each row, and I need to sum up those answers. So
on row 1 if the user highlighted number 3, I need my formula to check all
five cells and lookup the value of the highlighted cell. Something like: If
background is yellow then show value. All the values are numerical values.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
