Buttons that appear when double clicking in a cell

I have numbers stored as text in one worksheet. An arrow appears in the top
left corner of the cell. In another worksheet I have numbers stored as text,
but the arrows aren't there. When I try to do vlook-ups I can't retrieve
data. However, if I double click each cell on the worksheet with the
arrows...they disappear and the information I'm looking up appears in the
other worksheet.

I've noticed that two buttons appear in the toolbar when I double click a
cell. There is a green check mark and a red x. What are they for? I'm
trying to find a shortcut of making the cells readable/compatible to the
other worksheet. I don't want to double click 900 rows of data.

Any help is appreciated.

I no longer need help. I still don't know what the buttons do, but I
discovered how to change all of the fields at once.
