Default Trouble opening older Excel wbks - appears to becode in column A

When I attempt to open Excel workbooks with Office XP SP3, code appears down
column A. All the updates are current. Any help/suggestions?

How old is "older"?

Can you post a sample of the code-like data from Column A?

Just a sample, not a file.
