Count highlighted cells

I need a formula to count how many manually highlighted/shaded/colored cells
are in a specific column in a worksheet. I have a list of items
(collectibles) that I highlight as I find. I want to keep track of the total
number of items I have without having to physically count all the items.

I don't think you can do this with a formula (but, I'm often wrong). Try
Chip Pearson's site for information on functions to count colours:

See Chip Pearson's site for code.

Cannot be done with Excel native Functions.
