Formatting Cells with Dates

I am creating a Family History data base on Excel and I cannot seem to get
the cells to format when the years are past 1900.
How do I format the cell to recognize....example 9/16/1898 to read as
"16-Sept-1898"

Thanks, lls53

Essentially, pre-1900 dates cause problems for Excel. Try formatting those
dates as text.
