addition returns a number followed by E-15
 

i have a fairly long formula that ultimately subtracts 0.5 from 0.5 but
instead of returning 0 it returns 9.76996 E-15

any explanations gratefully accepted

i guess the result of your formula actually equals 0.00000000000000976996.
excel displays the scientific format instead of a normal number.
go to Format/Cell//Number to change.
