how do i convert a difference between two times (say the result is 1:30 in
h:mm format) back to a number (1.5)

all help appreciated

Multiply with 24 and set the Number format to general.

Assuming result cell is in A1,
Try in say, B1: =A1*24
Format B1 as general or number
