Greetings,
I often use the drop down list feature from data validation in many cells on
forms for ease of form filling.
Would like to do same but also allow the user to type in her own text if
nothing on the drop down list is suitable.
Is this possible?

Yes
On the DV validation dialogue, go to the error tab and untick the box.
