You would have to use conditional formatting to change the colour of a
cell depending on its contents. Select the cell and Format | Conditional Formatting - you will be presented with a panel where you can select "Cell content is" or "Formula is" and complete the details as appropriate. Then click the Format button to choose the foreground or background colour and other formatting features. Hope this helps. Why not just use a conditional format? e.g. "Cell Value is", "equal to", "the result of your proposed if statement if true", then set format required.
