I need a column starting with 1-1 but it changes to a date. When I change
the format to text it isn't exactly what I need. Can you have a column that
remains constant as in a rank and then have the corresponding data copied to
that rank without having to retype all of the data for that entry?

1-1 will always be converted by excel to a date, why can't you use text or
precede the entry with an apostrophe ' ?

There were actually two questions. I understand the text problem with using
numbers. What I need to know is whether or not you can have a column that
remains constant as in a ranking system where the corresponding data can be
changed without all of the cutting and pasting. For example if you had a
person that you had a list of data associated with rank 1-1 and then wanted
to bump that person to rank 1-2 how would you do it? I have a worksheet with
20 rounds with 20 people in each round. At any given time depending on
performance criteria, a person can move up within a round. I hope this is
clearer as to what I am trying to accomplish.

2 helper columns
so 1-1 is entered as 1 in 1 column say B,
the other 1 (not -1) is in the 2nd column say C

Now in Column D3 = B3 & "-" & C3

Only alter the value in B or C
For the purposes of this group you haven't explained what other values you
can have
I guess 1-1 1-2 1-3 1-4 etc
If so what other value can the first 1 have ?
