AutoComplete
My AutoComplete is only working when it feels like it. Can anyone tell me
any logical reason why this would be happening? |
AutoComplete
Also was wondering if maybe AutoComplete stops working after so many names
are entered into a sheet or should it keep working no matter how many cells are filled? "Nicola" wrote: My AutoComplete is only working when it feels like it. Can anyone tell me any logical reason why this would be happening? |

Nicola
Excel's autocomplete operates only on the column in which you are entering data......and only if no blank cells to interupt the flow. Don't know if this is considered logical but that's the way it is. Gord Dibben MS Excel MVP On Mon, 2 Oct 2006 14:47:01 -0700, Nicola wrote: My AutoComplete is only working when it feels like it. Thanks Gord,
Why do you think it would not be working if everything is set up correctly ie no blank cells, all info in the cells formatted exactly the same etc. I'm working on a list of about 6,000 names and wondering if AutoComplete stops working after a certain amount of cells? I don't know if there is a limit or not.
Another poster also stated he was having problems with a list of 10000 names. Pete_UK resonded with the thought that around 1000 may be a limit. I rarely use AutoComplete with that number of names so have not run into any problems. Hang in there. We'll see if there actually is limit or not. Someone has to know. I checked in the Excel KB articles but could find nothing of any use. What do you get when you select a cell then right-click and "Pick from list" Do all the names show up in the list? By way of experiment, I put "Nicola" in A1 and filled A2 onwards with
"Pete", and then tried various cells down column A to see how they would autocomplete. Cells A2:A51 autocompleted "Nicola" after entering "N" A52:A111 autocompleted "Nicola" after entering "Ni" A112:A140 autocompleted "Nicola" after entering "Nic" A141:A160 autocompleted "Nicola" after entering "Nico" A161:A212 autocompleted "Nicola" after entering "Nicol" Beyond A213 there was no match. Obviously, a slightly more complex algorithm than I had originally concluded some time ago, but I was also surprised at the limited range. Hope this helps. Wow, that seems odd.
