Auto entry of "=" before dates

I have a WS that automatically adds an "=" to every cell when dates are
entered. When the cell format is changed to a date format, the result is
always 1/0/1900.

If I create a date in a new WS, I can cut and copy the cell into the other
WS and it works properly, that is, the "=" is not added.

Why is the "=" added at all?

Go to Tools/Options/Transition, and be sure Transition formula entry is NOT
checked.
