special characters, other multi-language gotchas?

So I'm 'porting' a tool built with Excel and VBA (and some ADO calls
to mssql) for use in more languages -- and testing with European
languages caught me a little by surprise. No idea what's in store if
I incorporate Asian language support. But I'm sure someone on this
list would have a couple insights.

This isn't enterprise-style development - hey, Excel isn't a dev
environment - but I felt like an idiot when I realized apostrophes in
cell values spelled catastrophe. Currently I'm looking for the '
using InStr(), and replacing it with Asc() (to be switched back to
text in the database insert string using Chr()). Thought about the
triple, but that doesn't help when I'm just basically using the
worksheet as a glorified CSV sheet.

Then there are date values -- and this is a little cumbersome.

Recommendations on 1) using Asc() in modularized code, and 2) general
approach to handling multi-language support?

Best regards,
Jeff
