Macros have slowed to a crawl

I don't know what is happening but in Excel 2007, a workbook with extensive
macros that write things to cells has slowed down to a crawl. The etiology was
that is slowed down gradually on each subsequent run through. Even getting out
of it and rebooting the machine did not help. it is as slow as when I left off.
In some cases it goes to "Not Responding". I can't even use it. I tried playing
games with Application.ScreenUpdating = False (or True as the case may be) which
seemed at first like it was going to help but did not. Is there anything I can
do? I just got 2007 and now it looks like it may have been a big mistake.
Thank You,
