Is there a way to programatically solve this error?

Too many cell formats error
 

hi
afraid not. in 2003 and back, you are limited to 4000 different format
combinations. exceed that and you start getting the too many formats error.
they upped the number in 2007 because of the larger sheets but not sure by
how much.
