Rich text formatting gone in Excel 2007?

This is not really a programming question but I can't get rich text
formatting to work in Excel 2007. If I type "this text is bold" and bold
just the word "bold", the bold icon is highlighted, but the word "bold" is
not bolded. What gives?

It works fine for me in Excel 2007.

Perhaps if you supply full information, I or someone else could try to
duplicate your problem.

I'm stumped. I'm doing everything right. Now if I select the cell with the
rich text formatting and press and F2, then I can see the RTF (bold, in this
case). As soon as I press exit to take it out of edit mode, the RTf (bold)
goes away. I even printed the page to see if it printed with RTF, but it
didn't. Surely someone else must have this same problem? My office computer
acts the same way. Some setting in options perhaps?

You really need to be precise in your description of your setup, environment
and your process.

The only thing I know is that you are using Excel 2007, and are going through a
portion of the process that seems to work on my machine. But you have provided
no where near enough information for me to duplicate your setup.

Here's one discrepancy: You mention pressing "exit". I have no key on my
keyboard labeled "exit". Nor in the HELP section for Excel Shortcut and
Function keys is there anything called "exit". So what kind of keyboard are
you using? What ASCII code is your "exit" key putting out?

Oops. I meant escape, not exit. Sorry.

I'm still stumped as to why RTF won't work.

It's not working "BECAUSE" you are hitting the <esc key.

If you do anything in the formula, and hit <esc, you are canceling your
actions.

Hit the <enter key.

No, you don't quite follow me, Ron. After I type my text, I press enter.
Then I edit the text, bold that part of the text I want bold, and press
enter. I don't have rich text formatting. But if I press F2, I can see the
text is bold. At that point I can press Enter or ESC, either way the RTF
goes away. I tried the same maneuver on my lap and presto, I have RTF. I try
it on my old computer with Excel 2000 and I have RTF, so I know how to do
it. It absolutely won't work on my desktop with Excel 2007, and I have no
idea why.

Maybe because you are writing different things at different times.

After I type my text, I press enter.
Then I edit the text, bold that part of the text I want bold, and press
enter.

What you are writing now is different from what you wrote before. What you
wrote before was:

"Now if I select the cell with the rich text formatting and press and F2, then
I can see the RTF (bold, in this case). As soon as I press exit to take it out
of edit mode, the RTf (bold) goes away."

And when I asked you what the exit key was, you wrote that it was the escape
key.

Now, if, in fact, you get the same result pressing <enter, as a wild guess you
could try changing printers, or fonts, and make sure your video card has the
current driver. Sometimes printer drivers do strange things. Sometimes it may
just be the difference between using a network vs a local printer.
